Jan10 Lightroom 4 Beta

It’s here! Anyone can now download the Lightroom 4 Beta. I have not yet played around with it at all but will be posting my comments/videos as soon as I can. Here is a couple new features that Adobe has highlighted:

Highlight and shadow recovery brings out all the detail that your camera captures in dark shadows and bright highlights.
Photo book creation with easy-to-use elegant templates.
Location-based organization lets you find and group images by location, assign locations to images, and display data from GPS-enabled cameras.
White balance brush to refine and adjust white balance in specific areas of your images.
Additional local editing controls let you adjust noise reduction and remove moiré in targeted areas of your images.
Extended video support for organizing, viewing, and making adjustments and edits to video clips.
Easy video publishing lets you edit and share video clips on Facebook and Flickr®.
Soft proofing to preview how an image will look when printed with color-managed printers.
Email directly from Lightroom using the email account of your choice.

Nov09 Google+ Pages

After having been literally kicking people off who were building accounts for businesses, Google has officially announced Pages for businesses! Much like fan pages on that OTHER social network…..Google+ is much easier to navigate and isn’t completely full of ads and other crap you don’t want or need to be looking at while you’re hangin’ around the site. Nov02 I Moved!

That’s right, my office has moved! Possibly the shortest move ever….same building, same FLOOR! I’m now located at 681 Main Street #3-27 in Waltham. I’m sharing with the great Leah LaRiccia! Stop by anytime, my door is always open! (And yes, I’ll do some non-camera-phone pictures soon).

Aug24 ‘Light It’ iPad Magazine from Kelby Media Group launches

Photography training mogul Kelby Media Group has launched an iPad only digital publication called ‘Light It’. The premiere issue (available now), is free–yes FREE–and can be downloaded here: Light It. No word quite yet as to how much subscriptions will be, but knowing the Kelby crew, it will be worth every penny! I’ve downloaded it myself and have included a couple screenshots. The content not only looks amazing but is of course incredibly useful. It’s not super ‘ad heavy’ but they are present–interested to see if paid subscriptions will diminish some of the ads. Entire spread is 54 pages long, I’d say 30-35% is full page ads.

Jun23 Lytro – The no-focus camera

I don’t know about you, but this scares me…just a little…

Feb07 Today’s Tip: Compressing a PDF

I’ve heard a lot of buzz lately about folks not being able to send PDFs to people because of their size–especially photographers trying to send proofs sheets that were built in Lightroom or Photoshop. If you’ve been around Macs as long as I have, you may remember way back to the Tiger (10.4) operating system that had a ‘Compress PDF’ option in the print dialog.

Well if you’re still on Mac and have upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6) you’re in an incredible amount of luck. After doing away with the Compress PDF command in the OS, there’s a very simple FREE DOWNLOAD to bring it back! I’ve tested it and it works great–compressed a 42mb image loaded proof sheet down to 1.1mb! I also compared compressing with that method to using Adobe Acrobat Professional (my normal choice for compressing) and the difference was very minimal.

To try for yourself, click HERE to download the zip.

Install the package.

Open the PDF into Preview and choose File>Print.

At the bottom left of the print dialog, click PDF and you should now see ‘Compress PDF’ in the menu.

Dec09 Su Casa Designs Project

The time has finally come: the bombardment of new work here and on my website. For the past few months now, one of my shooting partners and I (Jim Hooper) have been working on a rather large project for Chestnut Hill-based interior design company Su Casa Designs. We have photographed upwards of a dozen residences over that time and along with the launch of their website we have put together a sample of some of that work.
